Shubhangi, Chandrashekar eyeing Mapusa Municipal chief, dy posts

MAPUSA: Shubhangi Vaingankar and Chandrashekhar Benkar will file their nominations for the post of Mapusa Municipal Council’s chairperson and vice-chairperson from the BJP backed panel, on Wednesday, May 26.

On the other side four newly elected councillors joined the BJP, on Tuesday. Councillors of Ward 7, Tarak Arolkar; Ward 8 Vikas Arolkar, Ward 16 Viraj Phadke and Prakash Bhivshet of Ward 20 joined the BJP in the presence of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, BJP State President Sadanand Shet Tanavade, Aldona MLA Glen Ticlo and others.

The two Arolkar brothers and Viraj were part of the Opposition panel Mhapshekarancho Ekvot while Bhivshet had contested as an independent candidate.

Earlier, Councillor Subhangi Vaigankar had joined the BJP. Vaigankar said that she will be filing her nomination for the post of chairperson as the post of chairperson is reserved for woman.

“The elections for the posts of Mapusa Municipal Council chairperson and vice-chairperson are due on May 27. Prior to that for the development of Mapusa town, the four councillors have joined the BJP. They will be part of the development of Mapusa along with the BJP,” the Chief Minister 

 “Though there were different panels, they have won with their own independent capacity and not as panel in their respective wards and joined BJP for the development of Mapusa,” said the BJP State president.

During the municipal elections, people of Mapusa had given mandate to nine councillors of BJP-backed panel and nine councillors of Mhapshekarancho Ekvot panel and two independent. At present BJP-backed panel under the banner of Mapusa Development Front have majority of 14 councillors.
