MARGAO: Benaulim NCP MLA Churchill Alemao on Wednesday urged the concerned authorities to simplify the guidelines for issuing disability certificates so that the people with disabilities (PwDs) can avail the benefits of the schemes provided by the government.
Addressing a camp at Benaulim to distribute equipment for the disabled persons, Churchill appealed to the panch members to identify the persons with disabilities in their respective ward and help them to avail the benefits.
Interacting with Social Welfare Department Deputy Director and In-Charge for Special Cell for Empowerment for Persons with Disabilities Taha Haaziq, the MLA urged to simplify the guidelines in order to get the certificate with regard to disability.
“It has been brought to my notice that even the government hospitals are refusing to give disability certificates citing the guidelines. And hence guidelines should be changed so that the people with disabilities get the benefits,” Churchill said.
Haaziq informed that the department has conducted nearly 15 such camps for the people with disabilities. Wherein, nearly 10,000 equipments are distributed.
“We had organised each camp in every taluka. However, Salcete and Bardez there have been two camps each. Nearly 2,200 eligible persons with disabilities have been identified in the State of Goa,” he informed.
He further admitted that earlier there were issues with regard to issuing the disability certificates.
“But after the new initiative called the unique disability identity card it has become very simple to do the procedure, and also to avail the benefits,” Haaziq said.
