Carmona village was looking neat and clean, following the cleanliness drive conducted by the Carmona Villagers Social Welfare Forum (CVSWF) in collaboration with Carmona Farmers Club, Carmona Sports Club and Sacred Heart of Jesus High School which was supported by popular singer Varun Carvalho.
The cleanliness drive commenced at around 9 am with all gathering opposite the market. Over 100 students of Sacred Heart of Jesus High School enthusiastically participated in the drive and chorused Varun to promise to keep the village clean.
Addressing the people gathered Carmona Sarpanch Savita Mascarenhas while appreciating the turnout urged all those gathered to stop people dumping garbage by the roadside and added that nothing is impossible if the village remained united.
CVSWF Convener Sucorro Mendes thanked the parish priest Fr Saude Pereira for his support and asserted that there should be no politics brought into development of the village and urged to keep politics out. Another member of the Forum Bona D’Silva clarified that the drive was held on Wednesday as four panchayat members had objected on April 7, to hold the drive on April 8, even though all arrangements were done.
The crowd then split into teams and went around the entire village collecting all the plastic and other garbage strewn around. School children too were seen enthusiastically collecting plastic littering not only the road side but even the drains and open areas.
The drive ended at around 12 noon but it took longer to collect all the garbage from all over the village. Altogether 175 big gunny bags were collected .
