MAPUSA: Siolim locals on Thursday raised objection to a petrol pump project which is proposed in close proximity of Kirti Vidyalaya School and also a residential area.
A joint inspection was called by Siolim-Marna Village Panchayat in presence of the residents and petroleum company at the project site, on Thursday.
During the inspection, Panch Sharmila Vernekar informed the petroleum company officials that the panchayat has received an objection from Kirti Vidyalaya School authorities, Parents Teachers Association and local residents for the said petrol pump project.
The locals pointed that as per the Supreme Court guidelines, petrol pump project cannot come up within 100 metres of school jurisdiction and the petrol pump proposed in Siolim is not even 30 metres away from the primary school and high school, having around 800 students and a play school with 120 kids.
The locals said that they do not want petrol pump in the residential area since if any incidents occur then it will directly harm the residents and school children in the vicinity. They also highlighted that there is already a petrol pump existing within four to five kilometres distance in Siolim.
Meanwhile, Siolim-Marna Village Panchayat assured that they will not allow the project without people’s consent.
Vernekar said, “I am with my people and will support their decision. If people have objection for this project then panchayat will not issue any permission for it.”
