PANJIM: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Friday began interrogation of mines traders who were issued notices earlier this week to appear for interrogation between February 1 and February 12.
Ghanashyam and Ajit Sardessai of M/s Ahilaibai Sardessai Mines; and Riyaz Shaikh of Nawaz Earthmovers were interrogated for nearly two hours. Sources said that the investigation team suspects involvement of Sardessai in handling of iron ore dump and Shaikh for purchase of unaccounted iron ore.
They trio, a senior officer said, have sought time of eight days to remain present at SIT along with details and documents pertaining to the activity. “They have been called again in connection with the case. Since they have to submit required documents to prove their claim, we have granted them time to appear,” said the officer.
The government has recently constituted a special court for the trial of people involved in illegal mining cases. District Judge and Additional Session Judge – South Goa, Edgar Fernandes has been appointed judge of the special court for speedy trial of offences for contravention of provisions of Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act 1957. Soon after this order, the SIT issued summons to 15 mines traders and others related to the case to appear for investigation from February 1 to 12.
