SIT down on cases so far

Even though the sensational Gudlar-tape expose has been handed over to the newly formed Special Investigation Team (SIT), it hasn’t exactly had an exemplary track record.
Chief minister Digambar Kamat in an urgent call suggested formation of SIT to probe into every aspect of the tapes wherein police sub-inspector Sunil Gudlar is seen negotiating with two foreign women over the sale of drugs.
Police headquarters soon constituted SIT led by Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Kurtarkar and his team comprising of DySP Mohan Naik and others.
This third SIT in Goa is incidentally has the same team which earlier failed to crack the 2009-Margao blast case. SIT assisted the Mumbai Anti Terrorist Squad wherein two members of the Hindu right wing involved in the explosion were killed.
The case was later handed over to National Investigating Agency (NIA) that chargesheeted the case holding 11 persons responsible for the blast, before a Margao Court.
The same SIT team was later asked to investigate into the desecration of religious shrines in Goa, which also did not achieve much success.
Sources stated that SIT was a move by the Government to defuse the demand to hand over police-drugs nexus case to Central Bureau of Investigation. (The chief minister however has officially denied this. See interview)
In response to a petition filed by the NSUI that there is no need of a CBI inquiry in the Gudlar case, as the SIT has already been formed.
