SIT re-arrests land grabbing mastermind

PANJIM: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Friday rearrested Mohammed Suhail Shafi alias Michael, a native of Karnataka, the alleged mastermind in the land grabbing cases reported in the State. Suhail was absconding after he was released on bail in June this year.

Suhail was arrested by the SIT early Friday morning. He was earlier arrested on June 22 this year and was reported absconding after his release on bail.

According to SIT sources, Suhail was allegedly involved in several land grabbing cases including three which were registered against him in 2013 and 2014. He used to prepare forged property documents of the land owners mostly working abroad and produce them as genuine before the authorities. Suhail had already been chargesheeted in one of the cases before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Mapusa.

Suhail was the second accused arrested after the SIT arrested Vikant Shetty soon after it was constituted by the government to probe land grabbing cases, exposed by Herald.

The SIT is probing more than 30 First Information Reports (FIRs) mostly registered by different police stations and later transferred to the SIT. Most of the land grabbing cases have been reported at Anjuna and Assagao villages in Bardez taluka.
