PONDA: Six candidates filed their nominations for contesting Ponda Municipal Council elections, on Thursday.
Those who filed nominations include three sitting Councillors — Venktesh Naik, Councillor Chandrakala Naik — both from Ward No 4, while Councillor Virendra Dhavlikar from Ward 2.
Former Councillor Shivanand Sawant filed nomination from Ward No 12. Two fresh candidates who filed nominations include Jyoti Kulkarni from Ward No 1 and Reva Fernandis from Ward No 3.
Councillors Venktesh Naik and Chandrakala Naik who are related to each other, had filed nominations from same Ward No 4. Venktesh Naik, who contested and won last time from Ward No 5, is brother-in-law of Chandrakala Naik, who got elected from Ward No 4.
Now this time both of them had filed their nominations from Ward No 4, which means they would be contesting against each other. It would be an interesting battle within the family.
It may be recalled that Councillor Venktesh Naik had supported her sister-in- law Chandrakala Naik last election. But this time, both will contest against each other. Councillor Venktesh Naik had won election thrice from Ward No 4 and had won the last election from Ward No 5 as his Ward No 4 got reserved for women last time and had helped his sister-in-law Chandrakala Naik to get elected. However, this time he is also contesting from Ward No 4.
