Six charged for alleged assault, abuse of woman at Mandrem

PANJIM: The Mandrem Police have charged six individuals from Mandrem in connection with the alleged assault and abuse of a woman at a temple in Ashwem. The accused have been identified as Pravin Sawant, Rajesh Sawant, Jairam Sawant, Rajesh’s wife, Ladoo Sawant and Ladoo’s wife.

According to the police, the incident took place around 8 pm on Monday, August 19, 2024, at the Shri Devi Bhumika Temple in Ashwem-Pernem. The accused allegedly assaulted the woman, abused her and inappropriately touched her, thereby outraging her modesty. They also reportedly threatened to kill her.

The police have registered an offence under Sections 352, 115(2), 75, and 351(3) read with 3(5) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) 2023, and an investigation is currently underway. After the incident, the victim lodged a formal complaint with the Mandrem police station. On Tuesday, she began a hunger strike outside the temple, demanding justice.
