Six Colvale Jail inmates knock High Court doors seeking action against officials

Allege being bullied and mistreated in Central Jail at Colvale since May 30; Court takes cognisance of matter, directs State government to allow petitioner inmates to meet counsels; matter posted for hearing today

PANJIM: As many as six inmates including Sameer  Shaikh, lodged in Central Jail, Colvale have filed a petition before the High Court of Bombay at Goa alleging bullying by jail officials.

The petition alleges bullying and mistreatment by jail officials following the alleged fight between life convict  Vijay Karbotkar and Tarzan Parsekar,  an undertrial on May 30.

The High Court, taking cognisance of the matter, has directed the State government to allow the petitioner inmates to meet their counsels and posted the matter for hearing on Wednesday.

On May 30 at around noon, a brutal fight broke out in the Colvale jail after a group of around 20 inmates belonging to Karbotkar gang, allegedly attacked Parsekar. After the brawl, Parsekar was taken for medical check-up.

The situation was later bought under control after senior prison officials intervened even as the incident has once again raised questions on the law and order in the jail premises.

Three days after the feud between the two factions, a team headed by Inspector General (IG) Prisons Omvir Singh Bishnoi raided the cells and seized  over 30 cellphones and other electronic equipment including Bluetooth speakers from prisoners. Several tobacco based products were also been seized during the raid.

It is learnt that when the police officers entered into the jail, many prisoners were found freely using the mobiles surfing internet and watching YouTube raising questions as to how all this could be smuggled within the four walls of the modern jail without the knowledge of authorities concerned.

It may be recalled that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant during his visit to Colvale jail in April this year, had informed that an IGP rank officer would be appointed to handle the jail administration enforce discipline.
