Slamming move to postpone municipal polls, Congress accuses BJP govt of having ‘hidden agenda’

Panjim: Goa Congress Pradesh Committee (GPCC) on Tuesday alleged that there was a “hidden agenda” behind the decision to postpone the elections of 11 municipal councils and the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) by three months, till April.

GPCC General Secretary Amarnath Panjikar, claimed that the election postponement decision taken by the State Election Commission (SEC), at the behest of the Government, is only to benefit Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“If BJP has no hidden agenda behind this decision, then the municipal administration and SEC should come out clear on reservation and delimitation by announcing it. Why have the delimitation and reservations not been announced so far,” he questioned.

Panjikar added that SEC should ensure free and fair election process and declaration of reservation. He also claimed that the delimitation will grant candidates enough time to plan their election process and strategies.

“BJP wants to do delimitation and reservation as per their wish, with the aim of victory. There is infighting within BJP candidates over delimitation and reservation. Hence to settle them, they require time and hence this political gimmick has been done by BJP,” Panjikar charged.

Citing apprehensions with regards to the possible spread of coronavirus cases during the election process, SEC has postponed the election process by three months on the request of the State government.

“If this is the case, then how come the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is addressing BJPs training programs and Swami Vivekanand Youth Day programs,” he pointed out.

He further accused BJP of using government machinery for their political benefits.
