PANJIM: The Anti Corruption Branch of Directorate of Vigilance has booked Goa Medical College lab technician for misconduct after it found he has also been running a private pathological laboratory at Goa Velha. The case has also brought the head of the GMC blood bank under the scanner as well.
Sources said two separate teams –one headed by the deputy superintendent of police Bossuet Silva and another by a PSI – conducted simultaneous checks at GMC’s blood bank where Dayanand Naik (48) is employed. Naik also runs the pathological laboratory styled as Bio-line Chemical Laboratory in Goa Velha.
A senior officer told Herald that discreet information collected during an inquiry, following a tip-off, confirmed the misconduct after which the ACB formed teams to conduct surprise checks at the two places at about 12:20pm on Thursday. “Naik was not present at GMC but he was found at his private clinic…” he said.
During the check at GMC, the team recovered the muster roll which showed Naik’s last attendance on February 2 and that he mostly preferred working during the second half of the day out of three working shifts – 8 am to 2pm, 2pm to 8pm and 8pm to 8am.
“He has never been regular in GMC and the muster roll confirms that. He would also prefer post-lunch break shifts so that he could spend his morning hours at his clinic,” the officer disclosed.
Interestingly, Naik, attached with GMC since the year 1987, had fearlessly displayed his mobile number on his private clinic wall at Goa Velha. The investigating agency has written to the local panchayat to furnish details of the clinic, as part of the ongoing probe against him.
Sources said the ACB has also decided to question the head of the blood bank in connection with the case and submit a report to the GMC dean and medical superintendent to take action against Naik, which would be suspension from service.
Naik has luckily not been arrested as yet but if it is established that he used the GMC materials for his private clinic, he will be arrested for misappropriation and corruption.
