PANJIM: ‘No entry’ rules are being openly violated by day and by night in Panjim, creating a danger of accidents. Absence of No Entry boards and policemen to fine motorists are the main reasons for violation of this rule, Panjimites told Herald TV, in this edition of Street Voices. They also said the Smart City had removed boards wherever they have done road works.
“Just Today I was in Fontainhas, and three four cars were coming onto me near the old Income Tax Office. So I questioned them (why are you coming on the wrong ise). They questioned me, “Where is the (No Entry) signboard?” Actually there are not signboards. At Corte de Oiteiro is the same case. Tourists come from the wrong side to go to Panjim Church. Goans know there is no entry there, but how will tourists know? At 31st January Road too the boards are completely faded. It’s not that people are not obeying the law. It happens even on 18th June Road, MG Road, the boards cant be seen.”
Armando Gonsolves, Resident, Panjim
“Young tourist come on rent a car and rent a bike and move any side. They use Google Maps which do not show the no entry roads. So it’s important for the CCP, along with the Tourism Dept to put signboards. The North Goa District Magistrate and the deputy collector have to pay attention and issue a notification to put signboards everywhere. This is important due to the floating casinos due to which there is traffic day and night in Panjim.”
Rui Ferreira, Advocate, Panjim
“There was a board near old PWD office indicating no entry. But today while doing works of the Smart City they took a smart decision and removed the sign board. So tourists are entering that street. This is risking the life of every pedestrian and every scooterist and motorist, because it is one way and it is a narrow road. There will be some mishap, some accident, then only the government’s eyes will open. Most of the tourists are using Google maps which show directions, but it is not showing the ‘no entry’ roads.”
