MARGAO: The sudden reappearance of smoke at the Sonsodo garbage dump on Saturday sparked fears of a fire again.
Fire Officer Gil Souza said they got a call from Sonsodo that there is smoke. The fire services immediately sent out two fire tenders and contained the smoke at the garbage dump.
Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai too rushed to the dump and inspected the situation. Sardesai urged the people living within the MMC areas to give segregated waste.
Reacting to the smoke he said, “I request the people to give segregated waste. This has to be owned up by everyone. This is not government against people, and definitely not the issue of Fatorda, Margao against Curtorim. This is the problem of Goa and Goans. We request the people to give segregated waste. If MMC workers are mixing it, we will make sure that we take action.”
Workers complained that there are sharp glass pieces, syringes and other items harmful to the workers in the dump.
He added that segregation doesn’t solve the larger problem or the fire, but at least it starts a concept like organic farming and assured to keep urging people with that.
Sardesai also said that the areas where MMC falls short, the government will intervene and take necessary steps.
