MARGAO: Using mud to cover the dump yard while at the same time opening it here and there to let the accumulated methane gas escape has reduced the smoke emitting from Sonsoddo dump yard considerably by Sunday evening with no fires seen anywhere on the yard.
The Sunday morning was again very cloudy and dusty at Sonsoddo thanks to the smoke emission and the mud and debris being dumped on. In fact motorists had a difficult time moving across because visibility was pretty low.
However, by evening the situation had changed and according to Additional Collector Agnelo Fernandes, who was supervising the operations the whole day, said over 75 per cent of the dump yard has been covered by debris and mud which has been arranged by the Public Works Department.
Using earth moving machinery on the dump yard, the heaps are being scrapped to let the accumulated methane inside escape without catching fire and this has also helped reduce the smoke coming out of the dump yard.
“We were concerned about the road and wanted to keep it clear of any smoke or dust as otherwise it would turn hazardous and an accident prone zone,” said Agnelo who was targeting to cover 90 per cent of the dump yard by working the whole night.
