Soccorro residents unite against illegal constructions

PANJIM: Residents of Soccorro have convened the Concerned Citizens Forum of Soccorro, Porvoim

To highlight cases of illegal construction and activities with members of the forum claiming a nexus between the local MLA, ministers, engineers and building contractors.
Speaking to the media, local resident Wilbur Ticlo said there were several cases in the village where despite rejections from several departments, builders went ahead with constructions.
“The case with illegal activity in a plot is that it is a beautiful structure but is illegal as there is no proper access road to it and was built despite being rejected twice by the Town and Country Planning department. The local panchayat is in connivance with the builders and there has been no action taken at all,” he said.
Adding to the illegalities, another resident Arundhati Chattopadhyay who moved to the village a couple of years ago owing to the scenic beauty of the village now complains of loud noises and haphazard construction.
“There was an instance where during the construction of a temple in the neighbouring area, there was so much of noise that even if we were to go for our morning walks, we would find all the beautiful birds that we usually see to be nowhere in sight. We had moved to the village because of its beauty and serenity, but this is being compromised to a huge extent,” said Chattopadhyay.
Ticlo who has in the past said he had written to the then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had resorted to move several cases to the High Court and said there was a need for the system to change and justice to be delivered.
