Social activist collects empty beer bottles, dumps them in front of municipal building

VASCO: Social activist Xencor Polgi on Saturday collected three sacks full of empty beer bottles from various places in the port town and dumped them outside the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) building demanding increased police patrolling and action against those creating nuisance.

Polgi said that he had requested the municipal authorities on several occasions urging them to keep a strict watch on such illegalities. “But it fell on their deaf ears,” he said adding that the negligence on the part of the authorities only emboldened the miscreants who have been throwing empty bottles across the municipal areas with impunity.

Polgi rued that despite launching many cleanliness drives people have been flinging empty bottles outside the schools, government offices and religious places.

Many a times the bottles break and the glass pieces end up injuring people who walk around especially those going more morning walk and students, he said.

Polgi said that he had requested the municipality to install garbage bins across the town so that the empty bottles are placed in these bins. He said that it was the duty of elected councillors to ensure that their wards are clean. He demanded that councillors and the locals MLAs must take responsibility for the areas falling under their jurisdiction and increased police patrolling in order to instil civic sense.

Since the elected representatives and the civic body chose to look the other way around, the activist said that he had no option but to collect these empty bottles and dump them in front of the municipal building in order to highlight the issue.

“I have no problem if the authorities brand me as a criminal for dumping nuisance at their doorstep. But I will continue to do so till the time the civic body wakes from its deep slumber and curbs the nuisance in Mormugao town,” he said.
