Social activists highlight concerns over law and order

Say criminals get away and quality tourists have stopped coming to Goa

PANJIM: Social activists raised concerns on Tuesday about the disruption in law and order in Goa. Advocate Hrudaynath Shirodkar and activist Mahesh Mahambrey highlighted the negligence of tourists towards rules and regulations of the State, emphasizing a lack of fear of law enforcement among tourists and public as well. They pointed out that this situation has resulted in significant individuals disrupting peace in the State through criminal activities.

Advocate Hrudaynath Shirodkar said, “Goa a seen as a peaceful state. This peaceful state has been turned into a police state. Crimes have gone up tremendously but these crimes are not registered. Criminals get away and quality tourists have stopped coming to Goa. Earlier, good tourists used to come to Goa to see the beaches, churches and temples. Today’s tourists come  for casinos, drugs and prostitution. Goa government has made Goa into India’s Las Vegas. I think it is the dream of the BJP to finish Goa. Goa thrives on tourism, after destruction of mining. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tried to take Goan Tourism to Lakshadweep.”

“An attempt has been made to destroy Goan culture. Law and order has collapsed. There is attack on rent-a-cabs, there is chain snatching, tourists are attacked, tourists create mischief. The combination of all these factors have ceased to make Goa a peaceful state,” Adv Hrudaynath added.

“Our demands are fourfold: there should be a proper tourism policy, Goa government should have a proper rent-a-cab policy, Goa government should have a proper taxi policy and Goa government should enact a proper police policy. Police should not appear to the tourists as police of a police state. Goa Police should be friendly to both Goans and tourists,” he said.
