Society has become cynical of every law, laments minister

Faults technical experts for not standing up to unqualified

MARGAO: Town and Country Planning (TCP) Minister Vijai Sardesai on Saturday said that by claiming that every law is enacted to harass the people, the society has become cynical, as such, the society needs a change of attitude.
The minister was addressing, as the chief guest, a national seminar on “National Building Code of India 2016”, jointly organised by the Indian Concrete Institute, Goa centre, under the aegis of Indian Concrete Institute with headquarters at Chennai and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
Vijai said, “We are a cynical society that objects to every law and claims it is made to harass the people. We need to change this mind set now.”
The TCP minister went on to blame the ‘technical experts’ of Goa for not having stood up when their job was being done by unqualified persons.
“Today is a time of challenge for me and the civilised society as certain technical things are being taught to us by persons who don’t know it themselves,” Vijai said adding that the National Building Code and planning of a state as a whole have to be taught to the students so that “they inform their parents what is right and what is wrong.”
ICI, Goa and BIS brought together civil-cum-structural consultants, architects, academicians, builders, urban planners, policy makers and associated government agencies to discuss the impact of the newly released revised codes on structural design of buildings.
The exclusive two-day workshop witnessed presentations by the code makers themselves and some of the stalwarts in the industry.
