SOCORRO: Socorro gram sabha on Sunday witnessed a commotion as the residents demanded the PWD come out with solution to the water crisis in Porvorim at the earliest.
Presenting a copy of the Herald dated November 11 with the report titled ‘When Will Porvorim Be Free Of Its Water Woes?’, Eurico Mascarenhas, a resident of Porvorim, questioned the PWD officials on the Porvorim water crisis.
“I want to know when the residents would be relieved from the repeated disruptions in water supply since Ganesh Chaturthi on one pretext or the other,” he said.
Dinesh Bhobe, a resident of Socorro questioned the officials on the quantum of water required in Porvorim constituency and the shortfall.
He sought to know whether the PWD has done a study on the population growth and the quantum of water that will be required in future.
Besides, Socorro panchas, representatives from the WRD, PWD, Traffic, Police and Electricity Departments were present.
Soter D’Souza, an activist, slammed the PWD officials for their casual approach to frequent breakdowns in water supply. He said water is essential and officials cannot wash off their hands by publishing a restricted water supply press release in the newspapers.
“The press release stated that water will be restricted but does not mention for how long. The people are left to fend for themselves as usual. There were no phone numbers mentioned of concerned officials who the public could complain to. Besides there are many new projects coming up but from where are they getting water,” he asked.
PWD Executive Engineer V M Chavan said they are not supplying water to any new construction. Even the new Devashri Complex is receiving water through tankers. He informed that the water requirement for Porvorim constituency is 23 MLD water but only 15 MLD is supplied on a given day.
A new 15 MLD water treatment plant is coming up in Porvorim, which will be ready in six months.
and will solve the water woes. The work has been tendered and the works should commence shortly,” Chavan said.
MLA Rohan Khaunte rubbished allegations of his involvement in real estate.
The other issues discussed were voltage fluctuations, illegalities in the village and development plans.
