MARGAO:  Even as the indefinite hunger strike by Cuncolim farmer Vishnu Desai and his family entered the sixth day on Sunday, hopes have been raised of discussions between the farmer and the government as Dy CM Francis D’Souza is expected to visit Margao on Monday.
Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik said the government is open for discussions with the farmer, saying that efforts are on to fix a meeting with D’Souza, who also holds the Urban Development portfolio.
Meanwhile, Fr Victor Ferrao of Rachol seminary and Fr Alban Fernandes of the Bambolim Holy Cross Shrine visited Cuncolim and expressed their solidarity with the striking family.
“The government cannot be blind to the sufferings of a common man. It is indeed surprising that the Desai family have been on hunger strike since December 17 and the government has not even bothered to discuss the issue,” Fr Victor said.
Meanwhile, representatives of NGOs from across the state are planning to descend in Cuncolim on Monday to show their solidarity with the Desai family and demand an immediate solution.
