‘Solution to fish vendors’ woes at SGPDA Wholesale market this week’

MARGAO: In response to the concerns of Goan fish vendors and Ramponnkars, the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) has assured to deliver a comprehensive solution regarding the issue of retail business at the wholesale fish market in Fatorda, Margao, by the end of this week.

Vasco MLA Krisnha ‘Daji’ Salkar, Chairman of SGPDA, revealed that instructions have been given to the Authority’s advocate to expedite the solution. He stated that extensive discussions have taken place with the advocate following the recent high-tension events at the wholesale fish market.

Salkar reiterated that the SGPDA has agreed to temporarily permit Goan fish vendors to utilise the parking area of the wholesale fish market to minimise inconveniences. This decision comes after the Margao Municipal Council and SGPDA officials conducted an operation to evict all retail vendors selling fish at the wholesale fish market and the surrounding public roads, as well as the parking space.

The move was initiated based on High Court directives but drew criticism from Goan fishermen, particularly the Ramponnkar community, who felt they were unjustly labelled as illegal fish vendors.

“We are deeply concerned about the Goan fish vendors, but we must also adhere to the court’s directives. We are in discussions with the advocate, and the proposed solution will be shared with the public, and fish vendors,” said Salkar.

Furthermore, Salkar informed that additional space will become available at the market once the first phase of renovations is completed, expected to be open in December this year.
