PANJIM: Even as State Congress President Luizinho Faleiro announced he would contest the forthcoming Assembly elections, the party national president Sonia Gandhi has asked him to enter the fray from Navelim constituency.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) vice-president Motilal Desai said that during a recent meeting with Gandhi, Faleiro has been asked to continue as president till the 2017 elections and also contest from Navelim.
“Lately there has been a lot of speculation with regards to change in GPCC presidentship, moreover it has be sensationalized by elements who are wary of not getting the party tickets due to the bold stand taken by GPCC President to give new faces as an able option to Goans and for also taking a strong view against the corrupt,” Desai said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
“Sonia Gandhiji considering the exemplary work of organization building done by him and also as the elections are approaching very fast requested Faleiro to not only continue as Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president till the assembly election are completed but to also contest from Navelim,” he added.
Desai said Faleiro was entrusted with the responsibility of GPCC presidentship by Gandhi a year ago and upon putting the local organization of the party in place he recently met her and offered to step down.
He said there will be no change in leadership.
