Sonshi villagers say they are facing severe water shortage

BICHOLIM: The Sonshi villagers in Bicholim taluka have complained that they are facing severe water shortage, since a foundation responsible for supplying them water has not done so.
The foundation is an arm of a mining company that was extracting iron ore in the village. Earlier, the foundation had said that it had spent around Rs 1 crore for supplying water to people in the State. It had also claimed that it had already spent Rs 15.69 lakh at Sonshi for supplying water through pipelines.
However, when this correspondent visited Sonshi, he could only see that though pipelines have been laid, but they were not connected to the main line. There was only some constructions done outside the houses for installing meters, but there were no water connections given to the villagers.
“We still depend on a single well for water. And the foundation has not yet given us any water connection,” a villager Mahesh Gawde complained. “And when the well dries up in summer, we suffer severe problem,” he added.
There are around 45 houses in the village; and the residents claim that the foundation has given only 20 water tanks to them.
