MARGAO: The Shadow Council for Margao has not only questioned the rationale of capping the Sonsoddo garbage dump yard after the monsoons have set in but also alleged that all is not quite right — the manner in which the whole exercise is being conducted.
In a press note issued on Saturday, Shadow Council member Savio Coutinho pointed out that the very purpose of capping the dump yard stands defeated as monsoons have already started and the rain water going through the garbage has started oozing out as lechate.
He said the whole exercise was a waste of public funds and also alleged that the quality of tarpaulin used for capping the dump yard is of a poor quality. Besides while pointing out that the Sonsodo area is only 15000 sq mts, the capping is sought to be done for 27000 sq mts for which Rs. 13 lakhs is being spent.
While pointing out that the capping is already shredded at various places, he said only the visible portions are covered keeping the top open to receive the rainfall which defeats the very purpose of capping the dump yard.
Savio has urged Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardessai to order an enquiry into the matter.
