Sonsoddo dump yard in flames again

Citizens flay civic body and other authorities for not implementing fire-safety measures at the site, despite court directions

MARGAO: Sonsoddo dump yard continues to be in discussion as yet again as the waste went up in flames on Sunday midnight.

The waste that caught fire was under the process of bioremediation, however, the cause of the fire is not known.

On the other hand, citizens criticized the civic body and other concerned authorities for not implementing fire-safety measures at the site, despite court directions. It is pertinent to note that waste at Sonsoddo dump yard was in flames several times and even the waste dumped inside the shed was in flames. What was shocking was that still the fire and emergency services found a tough time to approach the site to douse the fire as there is no proper access for the fire-tenders.

On Sunday night, too firefighters found it difficult to reach out to the exact site in order to take control of the fire. Security guard at the site informed reporters that he noticed the flames at around 12 pm in the midnight and immediately informed the fire and emergency services. However, fire tenders could not reach the site immediately as they were occupied at some other place.

We don’t know the cause of the fire, but the waste that went into flames was under the process of bioremediation, he informed. Herculano Gil Souza, Fire Officer at Margao said that two fire tenders were used to douse the fire at Sonsoddo and the cause is yet to be known.

Meanwhile, Savio Fernandes, a citizen of Fatorda, accused the civic body for failing to put in place the measure with regard to fire-safety at the Sonsoddo dump yard. No proper access for fire tenders at the site clearly shows negligence from the part of Margao Municipality. We all know that it is only after the intervention of the court and upon the petition from the Citizens for Sonsoddo, the issue is getting resolved, he stated.
