MARGAO: The fire at Sonsoddo dump site was finally doused at around 10:45 am on Monday following a nearly 17-hour battle with the fire by the Fire and Emergency Services personnel. Meanwhile, Margao Municipal Council lodged a complaint with Fatorda Police Station that the gathered dry waste was deliberately set on fire by unknown person.
The fire services used 33 tenders to bring the fire under control. While the fire tenders from Margao made 22 trips to the fire site, the tender from Ponda made one trip and the tenders from Curchorem and Verna made 6 and 4 trips respectively.
Meanwhile, MMC Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar who was monitoring the Sonsoddo last night, on Monday, lodged a complaint with the Fatorda Police station that some unknown person or persons deliberately lit the fire.
Meanwhile Savio Coutinho convener of Shadow Council for Margao lamented that all the efforts of the people to segregate their waste has been buried under mud that was used to douse the fire at the dry waste dump site.
He pointed out that the Rs 1.81 crore that was paid to Fomento Green for treating the wet waste has not been given even one kg of compost and instead it is now being treated by bio remediation and lamented that public money is being wasted without any tangible results.
