Tension escalated at the Sonsoddo garbage dumping site when several two-wheeler riders skidded due to wet waste flowing onto the road from parked trucks on Tuesday night. Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco has issued a warning to the Chief Officer of Margao Municipality, urging resolution of the leachate flow issue. He also cautioned about the potential action of blocking garbage trucks if the problem persists.
Following reports of injuries caused by the waste spill, agitated local residents from Curtorim and Raia rushed to the scene, demanding accountability from the Margao Municipal Council for what they termed as “criminal negligence.”
Expressing frustration, Roque Mascarenhas, who petitioned the High Court on the matter, highlighted, “Only due to the High Court’s intervention have some actions been taken at Sonsoddo. Despite substantial government expenditure, this is the unsatisfactory outcome we are witnessing, This is a tragedy, especially for the people that stay around in the area and those that travel along this road.”
Mascarenhas emphasized, “There’s a lack of presence or communication from Margao Municipal Council officials regarding the cause or the current situation. 5 people have fallen and are in the hospital, still no one from the municipality is answering the calls. The public deserves transparency regarding the use of allocated funds. “
Former Margao chairperson Savio Coutinho expressed bewilderment over the government’s inability to resolve the Sonsoddo garbage issue despite significant expenditures. He remarked, “Authorities claimed 80% completion, but the reality now stands revealed.”
