MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has assured citizens residing in the vicinity of the Sonsoddo dump yard that they will not be affected due the flow of leachate from the accumulated wet waste, during the monsoon season. After an inspection of the site on Friday, MMC Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar told reporters that construction of a tank to store the leachate flowing out onto the road has already begun, and that he would personally monitor the ongoing remediation work at the dumpsite.
He also assured locals that they would see a massive change in the situation at the Sonsoddo site before the arrival of the monsoon.
O Heraldo had recently reported about how the discharge of leachate from the rotting organic waste accumulated at the site was flowing into the gutters and roads, hampering the movement of trucks and workers.
It is pertinent to note that the situation at the sprawling dump yard is going from bad to worse, with every passing day. Even as dry waste is being baled, the wet waste is merely being dumped at the site in large hillocks, and very small quantities of it are transported to the Saligao treatment plant on a daily basis.
“The bioremediation of the legacy dump has almost been completed but the issue pertaining to the ‘inert’ component still exists. We will see to it that as much of the inert waste as possible is taken away from the site before the monsoon,” said Shirodkar.
He said that he would spend half of his work day in the office at Sonsoddo, to monitor the ongoing remediation work.
“I am trying my best to give maximum results. There is an urgent need to pay personal attention to the ongoing work, which I will be doing in the next couple of days. I will also implement a task list, with regard to works to be completed on a daily basis,” said the Chairperson.
He added that work to improve the roads in the dump yard will be done at the earliest.
