Sonsodo capping only on paper

March 29, 2012 : Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar gave the go-ahead signal to the capping of the Sonsodo waste dumping site on the lines of Gorai-Mumbai at a cost of Rs 7.2 crore.

Parrikar’s in principle approval for capping project came after he chaired the High Power Co-ordination Committee (HPCC) on Sonsodo, attended by Urban Development Minister, Francis D’Souza, former chief minister Digambar Kamat, MLAs Vijai Sardessai and Reginaldo Lourenco, besides then MMC Chairperson Sushila Naik and former DMA Sandeep Jacques.
The ambitious proposal is now bogged down in a row with the Goa State Pollution Control Board expressing its strong reservations for the Sonsodo site. That’s not all. The land fill site project mooted at the Sonsodo site is stuck up for want of final permission from the Town and Country Planning Department.
Sources said that Fomento Green had approached the SGPDA for approval of the hill cuttings to make way for the land fill site. The file is pending with the TCP since November till date. In the absence of a land fill site, Fomento Green has not obtained the consent to operate from the GSPCB.
