MARGAO: There is no harm in taking sopo fees from those selling fish outside the wholesale fish market by parking their vehicles in the parking lot, and many are found doing so, stated Councillor Mahesh Amonkar.
In the early morning hours of Friday, the councillor along with a few of his friends visited the wholesale fish market in order to personally check about the issue.
There was an allegation from one section of fishermen that the sopo collector engaged by the Margao Municipal Council is taking fees even if one parked the vehicles in the parking slot.
Meanwhile, the sopo collector also met MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes and clarified about the allegation made by one section of the fishermen community.
Later, the CO once again stated that the civic body has not notified any place in the jurisdiction of Margao as a pay parking area, and hence the sopo collector or any other person is not entitled to take parking fees.
Speaking to the media persons, Mahesh said, “One thing I have noticed is that many fishermen with their bikes were noticed selling the fish in the parking lot, whereas they are supposed to buy the fish at wholesale rate and move away from the market.”
