PANJIM: In yet another jolt for the Congress in Goa, Dayanand Sopte quit from its primary membership, claiming he is not happy the manner in which the party is functioning. His resignation letter sent to Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President John Fernandes on Monday morning has been accepted.
Sopte had joined the Congress after resigning from the BJP in September 2011. He had represented Pernem constituency on BJP ticket.
“We had anticipated this resignation long back. The party is getting cleaned. It’s good that these party hoppers resigned,” party spokesman Durgadas Kamat said, while confirming that the party had accepted his resignation.
This is the first resignation after Lok Sabha elections and fourth since the beginning of this year. Former Deputy Chief Minister Dayanand Narvekar was amongst the first to resign on February 28. He formed his own Goa Democratic Front to fight the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, but lost.
Former PWD Minister Churchill Alemao had also resigned on March 22 to contest as an Independent candidate from South Goa, as a mark of protest on his daughter Valanka Alemao being denied a nomination for the LS polls.
Shallom Sardinha also quit from the primary membership to protest refusal of a ticket to his father Francisco Sardinha to re-contest from South Goa. The party has already taken a resolution to permanently ban re-entry of party deserters.
