VASCO: The South Goa Collector is likely to de-notify the Khariwado containment zone, on Thursday, informed Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida, on Tuesday.
“The South Goa Collector and other government authorities had a meeting in Panjim to review the situation and discuss the de-notification of Khariwado containment zone,” he said.
Speaking to this daily, the Vasco MLA when contacted, informed that there are likely chances that atleast by Thursday the Khariwado containment zone might be de-notified and the area will be opened after a month’s time.
He further stated that after the meeting on Monday with the Deputy Collector, was waiting for the reply from the South Goa Collector’s office on Tuesday, but learnt that the State Committee had a meeting in Panjim, wherein there was a discussion on the de-notification of the Khariwada containment zone.
When asked when the Khariwado is expected to be out from the containment zone, Almeida said that after the meeting on Monday the Deputy Collector of Mormugao has forwarded his report and the findings of the Khariwado area. Based on the report, the South Goa Collector will issue the necessary orders.
“There are likely chances that by the day after tomorrow that is on Thursday, the Khariwado containment zone might get de-notified. I will get more clarity on the issue by Wednesday when the Deputy Collector will convey the decision to me,” Almeida added.
Meanwhile, when contacted Deputy Collector of Mormugao Sachin Desai informed that he heard the Khariwado people’s grievances, on Monday.
He also visited the Khariwada containment zone and all the findings and report has been submitted to the South Goa Collector. “Till now I have not received any order from the South Goa Collector in this regard,” he said.
It may be recalled that the Khariwado residents demanded their area to be de-notified within 24 hours, citing that there are no active COVID cases. The locals along with Vasco MLA had met the Deputy Collector of Mormugao, on Monday. The Deputy Collector maintained that the decisions will be taken based on the South Goa Collector’s order.
Some locals from the Khariwado, who attended the meeting, said that people from their area, which is a fishing community dominated area, had suffered a lot due to the containment zone for the last one month’s time. Other areas such as Baina, Sada, Mangor Hill were de-notified. Similarly, the Khariwado residents had asked the Deputy Collector to open their area too within 24 hours.
