MARGAO: As the commercial town of Margao grapples with the escalating issue of beggars obstructing traffic and posing a nuisance to shoppers and traders in market areas, the South Goa Collection office is stepping up efforts to address the problem. The action plan to tackle the menace is yet to be formulated, but temporary measures are set to be implemented in the meantime.
Srinet Kothwale, Additional Collector – I, told O Heraldo that a special drive is scheduled for Wednesday in Margao and other identified areas. Citizens have reported significant disturbances caused by beggars and vagrants, particularly at traffic junctions in Old Market, KTC bus stand, Nuvem, and Verna Industrial Estate.
In Margao’s Old Market, a group of vagrants has taken shelter on footpaths, erecting tents and causing hardships for pedestrians. The issue has triggered public outcry, with residents of Madel, Fatorda, raising their voices and demanding swift action from the concerned authorities.
The problem extends to young children seen begging for alms or selling various items at traffic signals and busy junctions. “Yes, the issues of beggars in Margao and surrounding areas are unresolved till date, it needs an action plan. The issue needs to be resolved with a joint effort from the authorities concerned,” said Additional Collector Kothwale.
Kothwale announced that his office would convene a meeting in the coming days to discuss and formulate an action plan to address the issue. joint drive, involving all relevant authorities, including the police, is set to take place on Wednesday to target areas where beggars are causing disruptions.
