South Goa hospital still waiting for an oxygen plant with bated breath

Deadline of May 15 given by CM long over, CSR project donated alternate plant now to the rescue

MARGAO: The oxygen plant at South Goa District Hospital (SGDH), was promised by Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, a project cost of Rs 9 cr to be met by the ‘PM Cares Fund’.

It will be a while till the first patient gets the gush of fresh pure air at the SHDH.

The Chief Minister of Goa Dr Pramod Sawant had also said that the compressor for the Oxygen plant was expected to reach Goa on May 8. But almost three weeks later there’s no news of the compressor. Even officials of SGDH are clueless about it.

The vital compressor has still not yet arrived. However, the need for oxygen supply for the hospital will now be fulfilled with another oxygen plant by Goa Shipyard Limited, under Corporate Social Responsibility and work, has commenced since May 23. Interestingly the compressor for this plant has already arrived.

“The compressor for the oxygen plant under CSR activity arrived on May 23 from Trident Company, Gujarat. The compressor was supposed to come on May 28. The work of making the foundation has begun from Sunday and it will carry on some more days”, said Dr Rajesh Patel Nodal officer SGDH

This oxygen plant will generate 600 litres of oxygen per minute. This plant will be running continuously”, said Dr Rajesh.

The deadline for commissioning the original oxygen plant at South Goa District Hospital (SGDH) has been already breached. It was announced by Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on May 2. It was supposed to commence on May 15.The deadline is long over.

Speaking to Herald Dr Patel, said the land and shed was ready long before, however, we could not able to start the oxygen plant due to the compressor.

He said that it will take another few days to complete the work and the administration is hoping to commence the plant.

At the moment SGDH receives the oxygen supply from Govind Poi oxygen factory, Cuncolim Oxygen Plant, and from Verna plant.

However, officials of the hospital can breathe easy as there is a gradual decrease in the admission of Covid positive patients. The oxygen supply was not an issue earlier also, however, the rapidly increasing numbers of Covid patients had created havoc amongst the officials, about tackling the cases.

The ratio of deaths is also going down in the last few days.

Thus even as the “PM cares” funded oxygen plant is yet to start functioning, a CSR funded plant & the decrease in cases have combined to make the medics at the South Goa district hospital breathe easy.
