MARGAO: Minister for Waste Management Michael Lobo has said that South Goa will need a 250-tonne waste treatment plant to take care of the garbage of the district.
He also said at least 3 or 4 plants of 5-tonne capacity are needed to solve the problem of Margao garbage.
Speaking at the SGPDA Chairman Wilfred D’Sa’s birthday function, Lobo said, “A plant of 250-tonne capacity will be required for waste of entire South Goa. The people have to be sensitive, positive and willing to solve the problem. I have discussed the same with the chief minister and the next Solid Waste Management Committee Meeting will discuss the idea at length.”
On the Margao garbage problem, he said, “Since the Court has told that no waste can be dumped on to the Sonsoddo dump, we will inform the MLAs of Margao and Fatorda. The SGPDA chairman will hold meeting to discuss the problem. Till the bigger plant comes up, we will have the organic waste converters to tackle the waste.”
“I have spoken to the Fatorda MLA; the government has to help the MMC and there shouldn’t be political differences. They have to welcome the help of the government. We need to identify the place and immediately tender the work to solve the problem. We will discuss it with the chief minister to fix the problem,” he said.
