MARGAO: The South Goa Police conducted meetings at the police stations across the district with the members of peace committees with an aim of ensuring that there is peace and no law and order situations during the forthcoming Eid festival.
Earlier, the South Goa Police have formed these peace committees across the district police stations to maintain peace amongst various sections of the society.
At these meetings, the Police Inspectors and other officials of high rank as well as Beat Officers and Beat Constables were also present.
Members of the local community, who are part of these police committees expressed their grievances while the police also shared their suggestions and instructions about what should be done to avoid any law and order problem during the festival.
While Eid will take place later this month, efforts are made in advance by the police in view of the communal clashes that had taken place earlier this year in Baina-Vasco and some few other places.
These peace committees were formed then to monitor any issues of communal flares up and to use the committee as a platform to amicably resolve and address any issues that may arise. There is a District Level Committee too and representation has been given to people from all religious backgrounds.
One of the major points that was discussed is the sharing of information about the area where the festival will be celebrated, the timings and the route that may be taken for any religious ceremony. The organisers are also advised to stick to the information that was given to the police and cooperate with the district administration. This will help the police keep a check on anyone who tries to disturb the communal harmony.
“Today the SDPO (Sub-Divisional Police Officer) of Margao called for a meeting of heads of all masijds in Margao. Meeting was regarding Eid celebration to maintain peace and harmony,” a senior officer at the South Goa Police Headquarters informed while speaking about the Thursday’s meeting of the Margao Peace Committee.

The meet was chaired by DySP C L Patil along with PI Vijaykumar Chodankar and Collem Police Inspector Sanjay Dalvi.
In the backdrop of forthcoming festivals, including Bakri Eid and Ashadi Ekadashi, Deputy Superintendent of Police C L Patil urged the members of various communities to maintain for peace and asked not to forward unverified content on social media which could create communal tensions or a law and order situation.
Patil also said he would strict action on unverified content hurting religious sentiments surfacing on social media. The citizens also promised the authorities to join hands with them to promote peace.
