MARGAO: Angry at the government failure to devolve powers and provide funds on the Zilla Parishads, the South Goa ZP members have threatened to field their own candidate in the upcoming parliamentary elections if the government continues to deny them both.
This decision was unanimously taken by the Zilla members at a meeting held on Tuesday.
After expressing anger and despair over pending works and also of the long pending demand of powers to the ZP, the members resolved and threatened to have their own candidate in South Goa in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The ZP has also decided to support J Santano Rodrigues, a former ZP member, who has decided to file a contempt petition against the government for its failure to obey a court order on devolving powers on the ZPs.
Colva ZP member Nelly Rodrigues said, “We will go for the meeting called by the Panchayati Raj Institutions Union and unite to fight for powers. No one is showing concern for last four terms. All SGZPs will unite and field a candidate for the Parliamentary election, if the government doesn’t listen.”
The SGZP also resolved against coal transportation and river nationalisation.
