Southwest monsoon in Kerala commences; Goa to receive thundershowers on 3rd June

The IMD has announced the commencement of the southwest monsoon over Kerala and has advanced into most parts of northeast India, on 30th May 2024. Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala and Mahe and advanced into most parts of northeast India including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and most parts of Tripura, Meghalaya and Assam.

 Normally southwest monsoon sets in over Kerala on 1st June and it advances over most part of northeast India by 5th June. Whereas this year’s southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala 2 days before the normal date and over northeast India, 6 days before the normal date. It has also advanced into most parts of the  Lakshadweep area, most parts of the south Arabian Sea and some parts of central Arabian sea and some parts of south Tamil Nadu.

Whereas isolated light to moderate rain and thundershowers will likely prevail over the North and South districts of Goa for the next four days. Heavy rains and thundershowers with lightning and winds gusting to 30-40 kmph are expected to fall on 3rd June 2024 marking the beginning of the seasonal rains in Goa. 

Squally weather with wind speed 35 kmph to 45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph are likely to prevail over Lakshadweep, Maldives area, along and off Kerala coast and Southwest and adjoining West central Arabian Sea. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas during the above-mentioned period till 3rd June 2024.
