PANJIM: Maintaining its normal date, the four-month long Southwest monsoon arrived over Goa on Saturday, June 5, almost 48 hours after it reached Kerala.
The Southwest monsoon arrival over Kerala coast was delayed by two days and it arrived there on June 3.
Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa observatory in-charge Rahul said that the Southwest monsoon 2021 has advanced over Goa on June 5. “State is likely to witness widespread rainfall for next 24 hours and it will gradually reduce in the next 48-72 hours,” Rahul said. “The monsoon activities will pick up from June 9 onwards,” he added.
Rahul said that strong wind currents are likely to prevail over the southwest and west central Arabian Sea till June 9 and hence fishermen are advised against venturing into the sea during the period.
IMD said that the monsoon has further advanced into more parts of the Central Arabian Sea, entire coastal Karnataka, some parts of Maharashtra, most parts north interior Karnataka, some parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, more parts of Tamil Nadu, more parts of central Bay of Bengal and some parts of northeast Bay of Bengal as on Saturday.
“In the coming 24 hours the monsoon is likely to advance further into more parts of Arabian Sea,
Maharashtra, remaining parts of Karnataka, some parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and some parts of North East Bay Bengal and north east India,” Rahul said.
IMD has predicted above normal rainfall this year.
Last year, Goa received a historic 162 inches of rainfall, the highest in a century, despite the monsoon arriving on the coast on June 11.
