Southwest monsoon likely to depart next week

PANJIM: The Southwest monsoon, which has missed its normal date of October 14 for withdrawal over Goa coast, is expected to depart only next week. 

IMD Goa in-charge Rahul said, “The rainfall activities are likely to decrease in Goa after two days and we can expect withdrawal of monsoon only after that.” 

“Monsoon withdrawal could take place only next week,” he said. 

Southwest monsoon has withdrawn from North India as well as some parts of Telangana, Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, some parts of interior Karnataka and most parts of Central Arabian Sea. Meanwhile, a low pressure area has been formed over East Central and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea off Lakshadweep area and the associated cyclonic circulation extends upto mid-topospheric level. It is likely to move east-southeast wards towards Kerala coast during next 48 hours.  

The official monsoon season ended on September 30 with six per cent excess rains. State recorded 123.5 inches (3,137mm) of rainfall as against the normal average of 116.7 inches (2,965mm). 

State has received around eight inches (201.9mm) of post-monsoon showers as against the normal trend of four inches (98.8mm).
