Southwest monsoon rains surpass dams capacity

PANJIM: With southwest monsoon rains wrecked havoc, the dams across State have reached their maximum capacity and are overflowing.

State has been witnessing heavy to very heavy showers since July 10 and the situation is expected to continue till July 20. 

In last 72 hours, State has received almost 12 inches of rainfall. 

The Water Resources Department (WRD) in a statement issued informed that due to incessant rainfall in the last few days, the Salaulim, Panchwadi, Amthane and Gavane dams have reached the maximum capacity and are overflowing. 

“Likewise, the rivers are also flowing above the warning level,” the department said.

Hence, the WRD has advised public not to venture into any of these water bodies. 

The entry to the dam premises is currently restricted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The monsoon currents have been very active over the State due to the presence of three systems that is the east-¬west shear zone, a cyclonic circulation over east Vidarbha & neighbourhood extending up to 4.5 km above mean sea level and the off¬shore trough at mean sea level off Karnataka¬-Kerala coasts.

IMD has said that with increased rainfall activity to continue, the areas vulnerable for landslide and flooding may be kept under monitoring. 

“Water levels in rivers may be monitored and necessary precautions may kindly be taken,” IMD said. 

Since June 1, State has recorded 16  per cent syrus showers that is 65.7 inches of rains as against the normal average of 56.8 inches.
