MARGAO: Superintendent of Police South Arvind Gawas has given clear instructions to all the police stations coming under him to intensify raids against matka bookies now that the Ganesh festival is over following the immersion of five days Ganesh idol.
It may be recalled that Inspector General of Police Jaspal Singh had recently pulled up the SP over rampant gambling going on in public in Margao particularly matka which can be seen brazenly being carried out right next to the police station.
In fact, mere desks are seen at different places where the bookies sit to take the bets and here are boards placed displaying the winning numbers of matka. Apparently a concerned citizen has been sending photographs regularly to the IGP following which he spoke to the SP.
At the weekly meeting that the SP has with the police inspectors of the various stations under him, the police inspectors were given clear instructions to crack down on matka bookies and increase the number of cases.
Yesterday nine cases were booked against matka bookies in South Goa of which five were booked by Margao Town Police station while one each were booked at Fatorda, Canacona, Colva and Quepem police station.
