VASCO: Parking vehicles at the open space in front of the municipal building at Vasco will no longer be free, as the municipality has decided to adopt a resolution to convert it as a pay parking place.
According to municipal Chairman Nandadeep Raut, the municipality wants to convert the open space in front of the municipal building as a pay parking place to sort out parking problem.
Towards this end, the chairman and two other councillors — Nilesh Navelkar and Sandesh Mesta — met Vasco traffic cell Inspector Suraj Samant on Wednesday and discussed the parking issue in the port town.
During the discussion, Samant suggested that the footpath which is very broad near Vasco main junction can be altered and utilised for two wheeler parking on both the sides.
Accepting the suggestion, Raut assured to work on the same after consulting other councillors.
Samant also suggested demarcating parking space for differently-abled persons.
When contacted to enquire about the issue of parking space for differently-abled persons, Raut informed that two years ago a resolution was adopted by the council and sent the same to the South Goa Collector. “But, so far no response has come to us from collector,” he said.
The municipal chairman also said that he has decided to take a decisive step of making the areas in the front and back side of the municipal building, pay parking to tackle the parking issue in the port town.
Raut has also decided to make a “pass system” for the rent-a-cab operators who park vehicles in front of the municipal premise.
Meanwhile, after the discussion, some rent-a-cab operators met Vasco traffic police and asked about the place to park their vehicles. To this, PI Samant told them that permits are issued to such cabs and taxis on the condition that they should operate from their house.
“But sadly, it has been observed that many cab owners who have more than one cab or car tend to park their vehicles in front of municipal building. This should stop,” Samant said adding, “Once the pay parking is put in place, the parking issue will be solved.”
Later, some cab owners met Chairman Raut and requested him to take decisions which would not hamper their business.
Raut reportedly assured them that he was thinking of implementing pass system for the rent-a-cab and taxi operators who park vehicles in front area at municipality.
