Spanish film ‘I Have Electric Dreams’ bags Golden Peacock Award

Iranian writer and director Nader Saeivar awarded Silver Peacock for Best Director for ‘No End’

PANJIM: Spanish Film ‘I Have Electric Dreams’ (Tengo sueños eléctricos) won the prestigious Golden Peacock for the Best Film of the 53rd International Film festival of India (IFFI) on Monday.

The film directed by Costa Rican filmmaker Valentina Maurel shows electrifying portrayal of passage into adulthood and which the jury found to be bringing the present and the future of cinema. The film explores 16-year-old girl Eva’s passage into adulthood, a process that is not just about getting older, a process which so profound that sometimes it can break people in a certain way. 

Iranian writer and director Nader Saeivar was awarded Silver Peacock for Best Director for `No End,’ a magical and subtle portrayal of Iran’s regressive socio-political system. Also Vahid Mobasseri, lead actor of `No End,’ was honoured with Silver Peacock for Best Actor (Male), for transmitting the complexity of feelings that torment the protagonist.

Daniela Marín Navarro, lead actor of Best Film ‘I Have Electric Dreams’ is honoured with Silver Peacock for Best Actor (Female).

Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz got Special Jury Award for the film ‘When the Waves are Gone’ (Kapag wala nang mga alon)

Award for Best Debut Feature Film of a Director was awarded to Asimina Proedrou hailing from Athens for ‘Behind The Haystacks’, which had its International Premiere at the festival.

Director, writer and cinematographer Praveen Kandregula received Special Mention by the Jury for his film ‘Bandi,’ the story of a poor and struggling auto driver who chances upon a deserted expensive camera, which gets him going on a journey from an auto-driver to a filmmaker. The jury cites that the film narrates the aspirations and passion for cinema in India.

The Jury for International Competition was headed by Israeli writer and film director Nadav Lapid and other jury members were American producer Jinko Gotoh, French film editor Pascale Chavance, French documentary film maker, film critic and journalist Javier Angulo Barturen; and Indian film director Sudipto Sen.

Mega Star Chiranjeevi receives Indian Film Personality of the Year Award for 2022 

Mega Star of Tollywood, Padma Bhushan awardee Shree Konidela Siva Sankara Vara Prasad popularly known as Chiranjeevi was presented with Indian Film Personality of the Year Award for 2022, at the closing ceremony of 53rd edition of IFFI.

In an illustrious film career spanning more than four decades, Chiranjeevi starred in more than 150 feature films in Telugu, as well as some films in Hindi, Tamil and Kannada. He is the 10th film luminary to be honoured with this award.

IFFI closed its curtains with the International Premiere of Polish film ‘Perfect Number’, directed by Krzysztof Zanussi.

Iranian film Nargesi by Director Payam Eskandari won the ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi Medal, given for a film that best reflects Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of peace, tolerance and non-violence.

The film is about a man with Down’s syndrome and the burden and consequences it creates in his life. Compassion and tenderness are the two qualities depicted in this award-winning film.

This year, nine films from across the globe were chosen to compete for the ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi Medal.
