Spate of robberies at GU staff quarters shocks academics

PANJIM: A spate of robberies at the Goa University residential quarters have shocked the university teachers residing there. The latest robbery this week saw gold ornaments and valuables worth lakhs of rupees stolen.

Agassiam Police officials said only two robberies have been registered at the Police Station whereas residents said this is the fifth robbery in the area.
“This is the fifth major robbery in our residential area. Day by day the threat to our security is increasing. This issue is serious as there are two large rooms allotted for a police outpost on the campus but have never been occupied by those who should be on duty in uniform,” said a senior professor of Goa University.
As per Agassaim Police there is no out post at Goa University and they only have vehicles which frequently patrol the university campus.
The 170 acres of the Goa university campus does not have a compound. Of this area, 60-70 acres is the core campus where the girls and boys hostels and faculty buildings stand.
“There is complete lack of vigilance at the Goa University campus by the police, all anti-social elements are seen in the evening in the vicinity of the campus and we can’t do anything,” another professor, who didn’t want his identity disclosed, said.
