Speaker rejects adjournment motion on art & culture grants

Opposition says it’s an insult to Tawadkar when the issue raised by him was not discussed on the floor of the House

Porvorim: Goa Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar on Monday rejected the adjournment motion moved by Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai to discuss the allegation made against Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude for allegedly siphoning of funds belonging to the Directorate of art and Culture.

The Speaker himself had accused Gaude of being involved in the misappropriation of funds released for cultural programmes in Canacona taluka.

On Monday, on the second day of the Goa Legislative Assembly session, the Opposition moved an adjournment motion to discuss the allegations, but the Speaker rejected it.

Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao insisted that the serious allegations raised by the Speaker should be addressed in the House, stating that this is an insult to the Speaker when the issue raised by him is not being discussed on the floor of the House. Yuri demanded that the speaker should make a statement on corruption allegations against the Art and Culture Minister.

However, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant dismissed the discussion in the House, stating that it was not the appropriate forum.
