Speaker to hear disqualification petitions against Kamat, Lobo on June 26

PANJIM: Goa assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar will on June 26, hear disqualification petitions filed by Congress President Amit Patkar against turncoats Michael Lobo and Digambar Kamat.

In a petition filed in July last year, the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president had the then leader of Opposition Lobo and Margao MLA Kamat, the party MLAs then, of working with the BJP to break away two-third of its MLAs and also for voluntarily giving the party’s membership.

Patkar had also pointed to the Supreme Court judgment of 2020, which stated that any anti-party activity amounts to voluntarily giving up membership of the party.

Both, Lobo and Kamat along with six other Congress MLAs eventually joined the BJP in September last year.

Last week, the Speaker had rejected the applications filed by Lobo and Kamat seeking dismissal of the disqualification petition filed by Patkar, on the ground that he was not a Member of Legislative Assembly and that he cannot file the disqualification petition.
