Speaker warns of action against people criticising MLAs & Assembly proceedings

PORVORIM: Goa Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar on Monday warned social activists and civil society members commenting and criticising MLAs and

Assembly session proceedings outside the House that it amounted to breach of privilege.

Soon after the question-hour in the Legislative Assembly, Tawadkar pointed out that some social activists and NGOs were holding media briefings and accusing the sitting MLAs of being involved in a ‘setting’.

Such statements amounted to breach of privilege, he said adding some section of press was also responsible. Press and media should also understand their responsibilities before printing/publishing their statements, he said.

The Speaker warned these social activists, NGOs and media against repeating such acts failing which they would face breach of privilege notices. Last week, the speaker had expunged the word “setting” from the proceedings of the House.
