Special assessment scheme boosts HSSC result

92.66% students clear Class XII; Goa Board extends scheme for academic term 2022-23

PANJIM: The special assessment scheme – with two Board examinations – introduced during the academic term 2021-22, appears to have yielded a good result with 92.66 per cent of the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) students clearing the Class XII for the year 2022. 

Almost 1,329 students were categorised under needs improvement category of which the results of 105 students was placed under ‘reserved category’ due to non-submission of eligible documents or internal marks or school assessment grades.

The first terminal examination was held from December 8, 2021 to January 11, 2022 in term of multiple-choice questions for 50 per cent of the portion while the second term with subjective questions was from April 5 onwards.

“The final result is prepared which includes performance of first term exam – 50 per cent portion, second term exam with balance 50 per cent portion and performance of internal assessment (20 per cent),” Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education chairman Bhagirath Shetye said, adding, “The improved result can be attributed to the scheme, as students were restricted to only 50 per cent portion per term as against the entire portion for the final exam.” 

The Board has extended the scheme for the next academic term 2022-23 too. 

As an annual trend, the results saw girls outshine boys with an overall passing percentage of 94.58 per cent with 8,750 clearing the term out of 9,251. 

On the other hand, 8,033 boys cleared the assessment at a passing percentage of 90.66 per cent. Total 8,861 boys had registered.

For the year 2021, a record number of 99.40 per cent students were promoted, based on internal assessment criterion following cancellation of the board examination in view of COVID-19 pandemic. 

In 2020, 89.27 per cent students had cleared Board exams, while in 2019, it was 89.59 per cent.

Shetye said that the supplementary examination will be conducted by the Board tentatively on June 24, for those students who are placed in needs improvement category or who had withdrawn their application forms for various reasons. 

The commerce stream saw the maximum pass percentage of 95.71 per cent followed by Arts that saw 95.68 per cent passing out. Around 93.95 per cent students cleared Science stream while vocational saw 79.04 per cent pass out. 

Nearly 9,577 students scored between 60-80 per cent marks, while 4,708 students obtained 46-59 per cent marks and another 330 scored between 33 and 45. There are 2,168 students who scored above 80 per cent.

As many as 349 students had availed sports merit marks, however, only nine students passed using these marks. 

Taluka wise analysis shows that Tiswadi with 18 higher secondary schools recorded the highest 95.92 per cent result, while Quepem saw the lowest pass percentage of 86.23 per cent. The taluka has six higher secondary schools. 

Apart from Quepem, Mormugao taluka recorded 87.48 per cent pass percentage while rest all saw 90 per cent and above students passing. Students from 106 high secondary schools had answered the two terms.
